Garage door spring replacement in Winnipeg.
A broken spring means the door won't budge — or is too heavy to lift safely. I carry the common torsion and extension spring sizes for Winnipeg homes and do most replacements in a single trip. Text a photo of the broken spring and I'll quote it before I arrive.
One spring, standard residential door. Most common single-car garage setup.
Two-spring system for heavier or double-wide doors. Both replaced in the same visit.
Rated for ~25,000 cycles instead of the standard 10,000. Worth it if the door gets heavy use.
Signs your spring is broken or worn
- Loud bang from the garage — often the spring snapping
- Door won't open, or only opens a few inches
- Door feels very heavy when you try to lift it by hand
- Opener strains or makes a grinding sound but door barely moves
- Visible gap in the coil of a torsion spring above the door
- Cable hanging loose or wrapped around the drum
Torsion vs. extension springs
- Torsion springs — horizontal bar above the door, winds when the door closes. Safer, longer lasting, and more common on newer Winnipeg homes.
- Extension springs — run along the horizontal tracks on each side. Common in older and lighter single-car garages. Usually come in pairs.
- If you're not sure which you have, text a photo — it's easy to tell from the image.
Why Winnipeg winters are hard on springs
Steel loses elasticity in extreme cold. When temperatures drop below –20 °C — which happens regularly in Winnipeg — spring metal becomes more brittle and coils under more stress. Most Winnipeg spring breaks happen in January and February, first thing in the morning after a cold overnight. Keeping the springs lubricated once a year reduces wear, but won't prevent failure indefinitely.
On a double-spring system, I always recommend replacing both springs at once. The second spring has the same number of cycles on it and will usually fail within months. Two springs replaced in one visit costs significantly less than two separate service calls.
Spring replacement questions
You can disconnect the opener and lift manually, but without spring tension the door is very heavy — 100–200 lbs depending on the door. It's safer to leave it closed. If you're locked in or out, call and I'll get there as fast as I can.
Standard springs are rated for ~10,000 cycles. A Winnipeg household that uses the garage 4–6 times a day will hit that in 5–7 years. High-cycle springs run about twice as long for a modest extra cost — worth it if you use the garage as your main entry.
Yes. Torsion springs are wound under high tension and can cause serious injury if released incorrectly. This is one of the few garage door repairs I'd always recommend hiring out rather than attempting with YouTube instructions.
Yes — daily 9 AM to 9 PM including weekends. A broken spring on a Saturday morning doesn't have to ruin your plans.
